Switzerland Travel Photos: Lucerne, Interlaken + Grindelwald \\ Europe Trip Part 3

March 14, 2016

Ohhh, Switzerland! I can’t believe it’s taken us this long to edit + share these photos from one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen! We took a roadtrip through Europe at the end of the fall (see Venice photos here, and Austria/Germany photos here!), and our third stop was the incredible country of Switzerland. We chose to stay in Lucerne as our home base, but if we had done it again I would have definitely stayed in Interlaken as our home base instead. Lucerne was beautiful, but much more of a big city feel than we realized, whereas Interlaken is situated right in the middle of the Alps with incredible adventurous activities at your fingertips. Our favorite was the train ride up from Grindelwald up to Jungfrau mountain – it felt like the Polar Express, minus the hot chocolate and plus a bunch of tourists 😉 The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. The Alps are so majestic that words honestly can’t describe them! Add in the charming wood A-frame houses covered in flowers, Swiss cowbells ringing in the air, bright blue skies for the first time on our trip, delicious Swiss chocolate and cogwheel trains up the mountain, and this was honestly one of Tim and I’s favorite places, ever.  How much does this look like a Wes Anderson set?!We stayed in Lucerne for a few nights after scoring an amazing cheap last-minute deal at the Chateau Guetsch (really, we booked on expedia the day before we left!). We honestly couldn’t recommend this hotel more, it had an awesome view of the entire city with its own lift to take you up the little mountain. Plus, free Swiss breakfast and a gorgeously designed lounge/bar area to overlook the city! Here’s a few snapshots around Lucerne, where we didn’t have the best weather, but enjoyed it anyway! This is the oldest covered wooden bridge in the world! SwitzerlandFall2015-47After exploring Lucerne, we drove to Interlaken, then the magical town of Gimmewald for the true Swiss Alps experience we were looking for! We took a train from Gimmewald up to Jungfrau as far up as the train would allow from the snow! In warmer months, you can actually take the train all the way up to the peak – we went as far as two stops away from it and LOVED the views!
We ate at the little restaurant at the top with a sweet French family and had the best bread bowl soup + German lagers! And THIS was our view out the window! This is what we get for asking another hiker to take our photo…I think he missed the memo of getting the mountain peaks in it, haha…

This is the beautiful town of Interlaken – where I would definitely recommend as a home base for exploring this region! SwitzerlandFall2015-262SwitzerlandFall2015-263We made a quick stop through the town of Lauterbrunnen, although the clouds had moved back in, the view in this valley would have been completely spectacular on a clear day! SwitzerlandFall2015-281SwitzerlandFall2015-280SwitzerlandFall2015-278SwitzerlandFall2015-276SwitzerlandFall2015-275SwitzerlandFall2015-271This was the beautiful lounge / bar area at our hotel in Lucerne and a few more scenes around the city. So pretty! We also took a little detour to Luxembourg to see the castle there 🙂 Happy to report that the mini country of Luxembourg looks prettyyyyy much exactly like Switzerland, haha! I’ll end with this photo of the Alps because it gives me all the Ansel Adams vibes and because this is how I’ll remember Switzerland – majestic, full of natural beauty and just waiting for a return visit 🙂
